When You Only Need the Next Step

Finding God’s direction rarely comes all at once. He often gives just enough clarity for the step that’s right in front of you.

Scripture: Psalm 119:105 (HCSB)

“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.”

Finding God’s Direction

Reflection:
I love progress. I suppose most people do. Life just feels off when you feel like you’re sitting still. Rest is important, in fact, it’s part of God’s design, but that’s not what I mean here. I’m not talking about taking a break. I’m talking about the seasons where there doesn’t seem to be anything to take a break from. The times when you feel like you’re not moving forward because you don’t even know where you’re going. God’s Word always provides light for the next step, even if it doesn’t reveal the whole journey, and sometimes that small amount of light is exactly what strengthens us to keep showing up.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” In the psalmist’s time, a lamp wasn’t a floodlight that showed the whole road from beginning to end. It was a small clay oil lamp, shining just enough light to see the next one or two steps.

Connection:
When life feels unclear and you feel stuck, that’s exactly how God’s Word works for us. It rarely lays out the full picture. Instead, it gives us just enough light for today. One verse. One reminder. One step. That’s the promise: His Word is always light for the next step. This is usually how finding God’s direction works, one small step taken with trust, especially in those seasons when you feel the weight of wanting more but don’t know where to start.

If you feel like you’re not making progress, don’t wait for the floodlight. Keep seeking God’s Word. Dig in. Read it. Sit quietly, and let it soak in. His Word may not show you ten years from now, but it will guide you to take the next right step, and then the next. It will teach you to trust, and to remember that you don’t have to have all the answers, because He does.

A Scripture reflection on Psalm 119:105 and finding God’s direction when you only know the next step.

Prayer:
Lord, when the road feels unclear and my steps feel small, remind me that You have never asked me to figure out the whole path. You only ask me to trust You with the piece I can see. When I ache for progress, steady my heart so I don’t grow weary or discouraged. Help me notice the quiet ways You are already at work, even when nothing around me seems to move as quickly as I hoped.

Thank You for being near, for walking beside me, and for giving light through Your Word that is enough for today. Teach me to listen for Your direction in the places I’m tempted to rush past. Give me patience when waiting feels uncomfortable, courage when fear tries to take over, and wisdom to recognize the next small step You are placing in front of me.

Most of all, help me trust that You will be faithful tomorrow in the same ways You have been faithful every day before. Lead me, guide me, and give me clarity to walk in a way that honors You. Amen.
