Designed on Purpose: Discovering Your God-Given Talents and Why They Matter

Discovering Your God-Given Talents: Designed on Purpose

Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10 (NCV)

Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. Be good servants of God’s various gifts of grace.

You Were Designed on Purpose

If you’ve ever wondered how to begin discovering your God-given talents, you’re not alone.

I spent years longing to find passion and purpose. I ached to know what I was made to do. But I felt stuck, because I didn’t know what I wanted. Heck, I didn’t even know what I was good at. For awhile, I even doubted that I was good at anything at all.

I asked myself question after question trying to find the answer I wanted. “What do you lose track of time doing? What do other people tell you that you’re good at?” Sometimes I was even asking the right questions. That last one, “What do other people tell me I’m good at?” I had asked myself more than once. But I brushed off the answer every time. I told myself, “nothing.”

Then one day, I finally heard it differently. I had heard it from my mom, my husband, a good friend. But when my pastor looked me in the eye and said, “You’re a writer,” it finally sank in. He didn’t just say I was good at writing. He said it in a way that I couldn’t ignore, that made it feel like it was part of who I was. It was a gift entrusted to me, and I needed to be using it.

Discovering Your God-Given Talents

That’s what Peter is reminding us in 1 Peter 4:10. Each one has received a gift. Not some, not the obviously talented, not the confident ones , but each and every one. That includes me. And it includes you too. And gifts aren’t for keeping to ourselves. They’re for serving others, as a way of stewarding God’s grace. His grace looks different through each of us…varied, unique, intentional. Writing in me is no less Spirit-given than teaching, leading, or encouraging in someone else.

Maybe you’ve brushed off your talents like I did. Maybe you’ve assumed it’s “nothing.” But God has entrusted something to you, even if you’re still in the early stages of discovering your God-given talents. You were made on purpose for a purpose. It won’t look the same for you as it does for someone else, but it’s yours, and the way you use it will always carry your God-shaped imprint. I’m not a novelist or a screenwriter, but I am a writer, and that gift matters.

You are gifted too. Pay attention to it, cultivate it, and use it for His glory. If you’re still unsure where to begin, keep asking, keep seeking, and be patient. If you’re anything like me, clarity may take awhile, but He won’t leave you guessing forever. And when He uncovers it, it will feel like a breath of fresh air. Matthew 7:7 reminds us, “Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” So, in the meantime, don’t stop watching for His leading. Stay faithful in the waiting, and He will be faithful to answer.

Prayer:

Lord, I pray for the one reading these words. She may feel ordinary, and dull, but you have gifted her in ways she may not even recognize yet. I pray that you’ll give her clarity to see that she has value, because of who she is in You, but also because of the way you’ve wired her. Show her the gifts and talents that you have placed within her. Help her to hear it in a way that will click in her head, and in her heart. Then, give her the courage to use it for your glory. Let her experience the joy of living as a faithful steward of the gift you’ve given her. Amen.
